A Different World Sequel Series Sets Premiere Date

Netflix’s sequel series to A Different World is set to premiere on September 24, 2026, marking 39 years since the original sitcom debuted on NBC in 1987. The announcement was made on Friday, May 29, during the American Black Film Festival, where Netflix highlighted the show as both a tribute to the legacy of the original series and a way to introduce Hillman College to a new generation of viewers.

The new series centers on Deborah, the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, two of the most beloved characters from the original show. Played by Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah begins her freshman year at Hillman, following in the footsteps of her famous parents while trying to build her own identity. The storyline follows her as she faces the challenges of college life, friendships, and the pressure of living up to her family’s name.

Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison will reprise their iconic roles as Whitley and Dwayne, bringing back a major connection to the original sitcom. Their return adds a direct link to the series that made Hillman College a cultural touchstone for viewers who grew up with the show. The sequel aims to carry forward that legacy while updating the story for a modern audience.

The cast combines new talent with familiar faces. Alongside Moon, the series includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, Chibuikem Uche, Vincent Jamal Hooper, Elijah J. Roberts, Renee Harrison, Famecia Ward, Dasan Frazier, Tichina Arnold, Joshua Suiter, Raven Goodwin, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, and Norman Nixon Jr. Returning from the original series are Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Karen Malina White, Ajai Sanders, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, Charnele Brown, Jenifer Lewis, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Behind the camera, the project brings together key creative figures from the original era and new leadership. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer. Debbie Allen, who directed much of the original A Different World, returns as executive producer and director. Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tom Werner, and Mandy Summers are also executive producers.

Netflix ordered the sequel series in 2025, and filming on the 10-episode first season wrapped in April 2026. With the premiere now officially set, the series is positioned as both a revival and continuation of one of television’s most influential HBCU-centered comedies. The new show revisits Hillman College with a mix of nostalgia and fresh storytelling, aiming to honor the original while establishing its own place in the franchise.
