Dragons secure Connor Watson for 2027 signing

The St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed the signing of representative forward Connor Watson on a one-year deal for the 2027 NRL season, adding experience, versatility and leadership to their squad.
Watson, a Central Coast product, brings a strong playing résumé to the Red V. Since making his NRL debut in 2016, he has gone on to register 178 first-grade appearances, along with five State of Origin selections and three Indigenous All Stars honours. His career has included time in some of the competition’s most demanding environments, earning a reputation as a reliable and adaptable performer.
Primarily capable of playing at lock and hooker, Watson is expected to strengthen the Dragons’ forward pack through his speed, strength and skill. His ability to contribute in multiple positions gives the club added flexibility as it shapes its roster for the upcoming seasons. The Dragons believe his leadership and professionalism will also make him an important influence both on and off the field.
Dragons chief executive Tim Watsford said the club was pleased to secure Watson’s services for next year and praised his experience at the elite level. He described Watson as a player who has consistently performed in the game’s toughest contests and said his combination of athleticism, skill and versatility would be valuable to the team. Watsford added that the club was excited to welcome him into the Red V, even if only for a single season.
Watson’s signing is part of a broader recruitment push by St George Illawarra as they look to reshape their squad for the 2027 campaign. He joins a growing list of new faces linked to the club, including Keaon Koloamatangi, Scott Drinkwater, Phillip Sami and Luke Metcalf. The Dragons have made clear their intent to build depth and quality across the roster as they continue their aggressive recruitment drive.
The arrival of Watson adds another experienced option to the Dragons’ forward rotation and reinforces the club’s strategy of targeting proven players with representative experience. His presence is expected to benefit younger squad members as well, with his professionalism and game knowledge likely to have a positive impact around the group.
For the Dragons, the signing represents another step in their effort to assemble a more competitive side for 2027. With several notable recruits already added to the list, the club is signalling a determined approach to improving its squad balance and on-field performance. Watson’s move provides both immediate experience and valuable depth as St George Illawarra continues planning for the future.
