New Characters Unlocked: Sharmaine, Melanie, and Vanessa

Trending on social media is the name “Sharmaine,” along with “Vanessa” and “Melanie,” after a series of comedy skits by digital content creator BAET went viral online. The names are not referring to real people, but to fruits and an insect imagined as characters in short Facebook and TikTok videos that have sparked widespread reactions from netizens.
BAET, a digital content creator from Daet, Camarines Norte, posted a 29-second comedy skit on April 8, 2026, featuring an orange fruit speaking in voice-over to a mango. In the video, the orange complains that its name was not thought through, pointing out that the mango is yellow but is not called “yellow.” The orange then says it wants to be named Sharmaine. The mango advises the orange to adopt the name and have it notarized. The clip has since gained more than 5.2 million views.
On the same day, BAET uploaded another skit involving a fly and a bird. In the video, the fly expresses frustration that it is called “fly” even though it has wings, while the bird is also obviously winged but is simply called “bird.” When asked what name it wanted, the fly answers “Vanessa.” That video also drew strong attention online and has nearly 775,000 views.
BAET later continued the joke with another video featuring an orange and an avocado. In the skit, the orange becomes upset after realizing the avocado is not a lawyer, which it needs to help change its name to Sharmaine. The avocado then reveals that it also wants a new name: Melanie. The orange and avocado agree to have their desired names notarized, extending the recurring gag that has now become familiar to many social media users.
The quirky content quickly caught on with viewers, who began referring to oranges, flies, and avocados using the new names. Many netizens reacted with comments such as “new characters unlocked,” treating the videos as a growing online meme. The trend also spread beyond individual users, with some establishments joining the joke.
SM City Legazpi, for example, posted photos on Facebook showing oranges in its grocery section labeled “Sharmaine” and avocados labeled “Melanie.” The post reflected how the viral joke had become part of broader social media conversation, with even brands playfully adopting the names.
As the meme continued circulating, netizens began using Sharmaine, Vanessa, and Melanie as shorthand references for oranges, flies, and avocados. The names have now become part of a shared online joke that started with BAET’s short comedy clips and grew into a viral social media trend.
