Mel C Explains Why the Spice Girls Still Haven’t Done “the Big Thing”
Thirty years after the Spice Girls first became a global pop phenomenon, the long-discussed reunion of all five members remains uncertain. In a recent conversation with Zach Sang, Melanie C said the biggest obstacle is not money, touring logistics, or any personal conflict with Victoria Beckham. Instead, she described the group’s hesitation as an emotional and creative issue rooted in how deeply the band still means to each member.
Melanie C explained that a full comeback feels “so precious” that the five women each have their own idea of what the right return would look like. She said that as the group members have all reached around 50 years old, they have also become more reflective about what the Spice Girls represent in their lives. According to Melanie C, that shared milestone has brought them closer and made them more aware of the role each member played in the band’s success and in one another’s lives.
The singer confirmed that plans for a 30th anniversary reunion fell apart earlier in the year after the group could not reach a unanimous agreement. She had already said in March that there was no reunion, and the newer interview suggested that while she is still hopeful, nothing is imminent. For Melanie C, the key condition for any comeback is full agreement: all five members must say yes to the same idea before anything can move forward.
She also reflected on the impact of the Spice Girls’ 2019 stadium tour, which brought major commercial success and filled Wembley Stadium, even without Victoria Beckham on stage. Melanie C said that experience reminded her of how powerful the group still is and how many people they continue to affect. She described the tour as a moment to truly understand the scale of the band’s legacy.
To illustrate that legacy, Melanie C shared an encounter from an appearance in Australia, where a four-year-old girl recognized her while wearing a Spice Girls T-shirt. The child knew exactly who she was, which Melanie C called proof that the group remains timeless across generations.
The singer said her attitude toward performing has changed over time. What once felt like something she did purely for herself has become something she sees as a source of joy for audiences. That realization, she said, made her understand that the Spice Girls have the ability to bring happiness to millions of people, and that sense of purpose makes the idea of a reunion more meaningful.
While fans continue to wait for a possible comeback, Melanie C is also focused on her solo work. Her ninth studio album, Sweat, was released on May 1, 2026, through Virgin Music Group. Even so, she remains open to the right Spice Girls moment in the future, provided all five members can agree on what that moment should be.
