Nate Bargatze’s The Breadwinner Gets a Rough Rotten Tomatoes Score, but Audiences Strongly Disagree
Nate Bargatze has reached a new career milestone with the release of The Breadwinner, his feature film debut, but the comedy is arriving to sharply divided reactions. The Eric Appel-directed film opened this weekend and quickly became a point of contrast between critics and audiences, with reviews weighing heavily against it while general viewers have responded far more positively.
Critics have largely dismissed the movie, calling its plot familiar and some of its jokes stale. That negative response has translated into a 25% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. By contrast, the audience score currently stands at 87%, showing a clear gap between professional reviewers and moviegoers. Many viewers have described the film as funny, and some have praised its family-friendly tone, which fits Bargatze’s reputation as a clean comic. Even among those who felt the movie was not especially strong, several still called it cute or noted its more endearing qualities. Bargatze’s performance as a leading man has also drawn praise from some audience members.
The Breadwinner is co-written and co-produced by Bargatze and centers on a family man named Nate Wilcox, who is left to manage the household and care for his three daughters while his wife, played by Mandy Moore, pursues a major business opportunity. As he struggles to take on the duties his spouse normally handles, comedic complications follow. Critics, however, have argued that the premise feels outdated and built around clichés.
Despite some audience support, the film’s box office start was modest. Bargatze had previously worked to make tickets more affordable for viewers ahead of release, but The Breadwinner opened to only $7.5 million worldwide. That fell well short of early projections, which had suggested a debut of at least $19 million. The film was released by Sony and reportedly carried a $25 million production budget.
The mixed response places The Breadwinner among a growing list of 2026 titles that have split critics and audiences, similar to Michael, which received warmer support from moviegoers than from reviewers. For Bargatze, the film marks an important first step into moviemaking, even if its theatrical performance and critical reception have been uneven. The Breadwinner is still playing in theaters, giving audiences a chance to decide for themselves whether Bargatze’s move from stand-up to film succeeds.
