The Internet Is Divided Over Rue’s Fate in the Euphoria Finale

Euphoria season 3’s finale has sparked major backlash and praise after a shocking ending in which Zendaya’s Rue dies. The long-awaited final season, which aired on HBO and streamed on Max, took a darker and more mature direction than earlier installments, with new music, visuals, and a heavier focus on addiction, grief, and consequence. The episode’s most controversial moment came when Rue relapsed after being given pills by Alamo and later died from a fentanyl-related overdose, a turn many viewers found devastating.

Supporters of the ending have defended Sam Levinson’s decision as emotionally honest and consistent with the reality of drug addiction. Levinson, whose own experience with substance abuse influenced the series, reportedly said in the episode commentary that Rue’s death reflected how dangerous and pervasive fentanyl has become. Some fans also noted that the ending mirrors the original Israeli version of Euphoria, which ended the same way for Rue’s character. Others connected the scene to the real-life death of actor Angus Cloud, whose presence was honored throughout the season, including in a touching shot shared with Zendaya in the finale.

The reaction online has been sharply divided. On Instagram and X, many viewers praised the finale as powerful, tragic, and unforgettable. Some said the goodbye to Rue felt fitting and emotionally resonant, while others believed the series captured the pain and chaos of addiction with uncomfortable realism. A number of fans also pointed out that the finale’s tone aligned with the show’s long-running focus on the consequences of drug use, especially in a story that has always leaned into heartbreak over resolution.

But the negative response was just as loud. Many fans criticized Levinson for killing off Rue, arguing that the finale felt cruel, cheap, or unnecessary. Some said the show wasted opportunities to give the wider cast a more meaningful farewell, while others complained that too much attention was spent on side storylines instead of the central characters. Several angry posts accused the finale of mishandling addiction and undermining the emotional investment built over the series. For some viewers, Rue’s death was not a bold artistic choice but a disappointing conclusion to a beloved character arc.

The finale also shifted focus in its final stretch toward Colman Domingo’s Ali, adding another layer of debate about whether the ending served the ensemble cast or narrowed too sharply onto Rue’s fate. Still, the conversation shows how deeply Euphoria has connected with audiences and how difficult it is to satisfy expectations for a series finale. With fans still processing the ending, the debate over Rue Bennett’s final chapter is likely to continue as the show’s legacy is reassessed.
