France Team: William Saliba Injured!

William Saliba could be sidelined for several weeks after aggravating an existing injury during Saturday’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, a setback that raises serious concern for France ahead of the World Cup. The 25-year-old center back reportedly played through the pain despite already being weakened before the match, but his condition worsened during the final. France’s federation is now monitoring the situation closely as Saliba continues to suffer from the injury.
The timing is especially damaging for Didier Deschamps and the French national team, with the World Cup approaching quickly and France’s first match set for June 15, 2026, against Senegal. Saliba, who has earned 31 caps for Les Bleus, had been in contention for a starting role alongside Dayot Upamecano. His potential absence could force France’s coaching staff to rethink its defensive plans just days before the tournament begins.
Saliba’s injury comes as a major blow because of his importance to both club and country. He has been regarded as one of the top right-sided central defenders in England this season, and his form had made him a likely fixture in France’s back line. Losing him at this stage would weaken a position that was expected to be one of France’s strengths.
Even so, France does have alternatives in central defense. Ibrahima Konaté remains a strong option, while Maxence Lacroix, Lucas Hernandez and possibly Jules Koundé could also be considered. The squad is not short on talent, but Saliba’s possible absence would still be a significant loss given his experience, consistency and recent performances.
For now, the situation remains uncertain, but the concern within the French Football Federation is real. What initially appeared to be a painful but manageable appearance in a major final may now have broader consequences for France’s World Cup campaign. With only about two weeks before kickoff, Saliba is in a race against time to recover, and the coming days will determine whether he can still be available for the tournament.
