Edwin van der Sar explains why Michael Carrick is facing a “headache” at Manchester United

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has backed Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment and said the club face a major challenge in replacing Casemiro. Speaking after United’s season, Van der Sar said Carrick brought stability, clarity and a more recognisable style that helped support the team’s development. He said the board took time to assess results, the players’ response and feedback from senior figures before making a decision on the permanent role.
Van der Sar also highlighted Casemiro’s expected departure as one of the biggest issues facing United this summer. He said the midfielder’s exit would leave a significant gap in the middle of the pitch, describing it as a “headache” for the club. United are reportedly close to finalising a £38 million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but that deal is not expected to change the broader plan to recruit a high-profile replacement for Casemiro.
The Dutchman suggested United will continue to focus on players with proven Premier League experience when possible. He pointed to the club’s recent success with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha as evidence that the strategy has been effective, while also noting that United may again look to strengthen with younger talent where necessary. He added that the team will likely scan the domestic market for players who can fill key gaps and raise the overall standard year by year.
Van der Sar was also asked about Senne Lammens, the goalkeeper signed through a data-led recruitment approach from Belgium. He said the young keeper had been excellent in his first season, praising his composure, cross-claiming and shot-stopping. Lammens became a regular after making his debut in October and started every game afterward, earning strong approval for how he handled the transition and contributed to the team.
According to Van der Sar, Lammens looks like a strong long-term signing who can develop into an important part of the squad as United continue building for future success. He described the goalkeeper as a good purchase for the coming years, with the potential to help the club challenge for honours under Carrick.
United have already set their main priorities for the transfer window, with midfield overhaul at the top of the list. The club are also looking to add strength on the left wing and bring in a new left-back as part of a wider squad rebuild. Van der Sar’s comments reflect a summer in which United are expected to balance immediate needs with longer-term squad planning, especially as they prepare for life without Casemiro and under a newly confirmed permanent manager.
