Jay-Z Takes Aim at Kanye West, Drake and Nicki Minaj in Roots Picnic Freestyle

Jay-Z appeared to address several major rap figures during a freestyle performance at the Roots Picnic 2026 in Philadelphia, marking his first solo concert in six years. The 56-year-old rapper seemed to direct lyrics at Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Kanye West, using the set to respond to recent tensions and public remarks from each artist.
During the performance, Jay-Z delivered lines that appeared to reference Drake’s “The jig is up” lyric from “Janice STFU,” while also pushing back on claims about his success and legacy. He rapped about being ahead on the charts, insisted that others looked up to him rather than the reverse, and suggested that critics should challenge the companies that control their publishing and contracts instead of him.
He also appeared to take aim at Nicki Minaj by referencing a female rapper who had returned to “that stuff,” along with what seemed to be a jab at her personal life and her recent political alignment. The lyrics suggested he viewed the issue as one involving a rapper he could not consider a true rival, despite the attention surrounding her comments and online behavior.
Jay-Z also seemed to respond to Kanye West after West made remarks about Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s children. In his freestyle, Jay-Z questioned the shame in attacking his family and dismissed the attempts to provoke him. He also made a pointed reference to music executive Lance “Un” Rivera, who was involved in a long-ago incident with Jay-Z, as part of a broader statement about people trying to get under his skin.
The performance drew attention not only because of the lyrical content, but also because it was Jay-Z’s first solo concert in six years. The appearance came as part of the Roots Picnic 2026 weekend in Philadelphia, adding extra weight to a set that many fans saw as a rare public statement from one of hip-hop’s most influential figures.
Jay-Z is now preparing for a series of shows at Yankee Stadium to celebrate two milestones in his catalog: the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. The upcoming run includes three concerts and a final performance titled “Extra Innings,” signaling a major celebration of his legacy as he continues to remain a central figure in rap culture.
The freestyle quickly fueled discussion online because of its apparent targets and the timing of the performance. With tensions already high across the hip-hop landscape, Jay-Z’s remarks were interpreted as a reminder that he remains willing to respond directly when he feels challenged.
