Tom Selleck Update Sparks Buzz Over Possible Boston Blue Appearance
Boston Blue has finished its first season, and attention is already turning to Season 2, with renewed hope that Tom Selleck may eventually reprise his role as Frank Reagan. The Blue Bloods spinoff brought Donnie Wahlberg back as Danny Reagan and also reunited viewers with several familiar characters from the original series, but the biggest question throughout the season has been whether Selleck will return to the franchise. Recent comments from Sonequa Martin-Green suggest that talks about a possible appearance have been ongoing for some time, though any return would depend on finding the right story. She said the team wants the story to be “just right” because Selleck cares deeply about narrative quality, and she noted that everyone involved would welcome him if the timing and material worked out.
The possibility of Selleck returning has been a subject of mixed signals. Wahlberg previously said he had spoken with his on-screen father and that Selleck seemed supportive of the idea. Selleck, however, has been more cautious, saying he is unsure whether he would appear on the show. Even so, the latest update suggests that discussions are active rather than closed, which gives fans reason to remain hopeful.
Martin-Green, who plays Danny’s new on-screen partner in Boston Blue, also expressed enthusiasm about bringing more Blue Bloods veterans into the spinoff. She said appearances by original cast members help legitimize the new series and feel like a passing of the torch from the earlier show. According to her, the cast is eager to welcome any Blue Bloods character, but she singled out Selleck as especially meaningful for the franchise’s future.
So far, Boston Blue has already featured several major Blue Bloods connections. Bridget Moynahan returned as Erin Reagan, while Len Cariou reprised his role as Henry Reagan. Marisa Ramirez also returned as Maria Baez, Danny’s longtime partner and love interest, and Sean Reagan now appears in the series, played by Mika Amonsen. The show has also included name-drops and references to the wider Reagan family, helping keep the link between the two series strong.
With Boston Blue renewed for a second season, there is growing optimism that even more familiar faces could appear. A Frank Reagan cameo would be one of the most notable franchise moments possible, whether in Boston or through a visit to New York. For now, no return has been confirmed, but the latest remarks indicate that the idea is still very much alive. Meanwhile, Selleck has remained active since Blue Bloods ended in 2024, including landing a new project with The History Channel, which could affect scheduling. Even so, fans of the franchise continue to hope that the right story and the right timing will eventually bring Frank Reagan back.
