Gayle King Asked Oprah to Address and Shut Down Longstanding Lesbian Rumors on Her Show

Gayle King reflected on a long-running rumor that once upset her, saying she was frustrated by Oprah Winfrey’s response when the topic came up. King explained that Winfrey, who has been with Stedman Graham since 1986 and was briefly engaged to him in 1992 before choosing a lifelong partnership without marriage, could not fully relate to the situation because she had a committed partner while King did not. According to King, that difference made Winfrey’s reaction especially difficult for her at the time.

King recalled thinking, “So, well, that’s fine for you to say. You have somebody. I don’t,” describing how the conversation left her feeling dismissed. She said she was bothered by Winfrey’s refusal to directly address the lesbian rumors that had followed her for years. King noted that the speculation used to deeply affect her, but her feelings have changed over time.

Even now, she said, people still occasionally repeat claims or imply that there is hidden truth behind the rumors. King said she no longer gives those comments much power. “I don’t care,” she said, explaining that she has reached a point in life where very little bothers her. She added that social media can intensify negativity, calling it “an accelerator on hate,” and said she has learned not to let outside opinions consume her.

King emphasized that her peace now comes from being satisfied with her own choices and actions. “As long as I feel good about what I’m doing…Otherwise, you’ll drive yourself nuts,” she said, describing a more grounded outlook shaped by experience. Her comments suggest that while the rumors once caused real frustration, she has since moved past them and no longer feels the need to defend herself against every claim.

The remarks highlight the pressure public figures can face when personal speculation becomes part of their public image. For King, what once felt hurtful has become something she can dismiss more easily. Her perspective reflects a broader shift toward protecting mental well-being and limiting the impact of online chatter.

Winfrey and Graham’s relationship has long drawn public attention because of its durability and unconventional path. The two have remained together for decades without marrying, which has often invited discussion about their personal lives. King’s comments revisit that context while focusing on how her own experience differed and why that difference mattered to her when the rumors were circulating.

Ultimately, King said she has reached a place of indifference about the speculation. Rather than continue to engage with it, she appears focused on her own life, her own standards, and the idea that outside noise should not control her emotions.
