EastEnders Surprises Fans With Unannounced Return of Beloved Character Two Years After Exit in Early BBC iPlayer Release

EastEnders delivered a major surprise on Monday 25 May 2026, with Whitney Dean making an unexpected return to Walford after two years away. The episode, available first on BBC iPlayer from 6am before airing on BBC One at 7.30pm, opened the soap’s big wedding week for Vicki Fowler and Ross Marshall, but the celebrations were quickly overshadowed by drama involving Zack Hudson.

Zack, who is set to serve as Ross’s best man, became distracted after receiving a mysterious phone call while working in the Queen Vic. He abandoned some of the wedding preparations and headed off to a secret meeting, where viewers discovered he had gone to dinner at Knight Fusion with none other than Whitney. The reunion marked Whitney’s first appearance back on the soap since her emotional exit in 2024, when she left Walford to start a new life with her baby daughter Dolly and adopted daughter Britney Wainwright.

The return is particularly significant because actress Shona McGarty stepped away from the role after 15 years in 2023, making Whitney’s comeback a brief but notable revisit to the character’s EastEnders history. Her reappearance also gives Zack a much-needed but emotionally complicated update on the woman he once planned to build a future with.

Whitney and Zack’s conversation showed the pair on friendly terms. Whitney shared photos of Dolly and Britney, while Zack tried to keep the tone light and even joked with her. Whitney explained that she is happy and in a good place, but Zack then pushed for something more, suggesting they could reunite and that she should no longer be raising the children as a single mother. Whitney rejected the idea and revealed that she has moved on and is now seeing someone else, leaving Zack devastated.

The encounter reopens a painful chapter for Zack, whose relationship with Whitney ended after she discovered he had cheated on her with her friend and adopted cousin Lauren. Their wedding day later collapsed in heartbreak, ultimately leading to Whitney’s departure from Walford. With her return now undercutting any hope Zack may have had of winning her back, the question is whether his latest disappointment could push him into making reckless choices.

Monday’s episode also continued other storylines across Albert Square. Gina Knight was forced to spend time with her sinister adopted grandfather Eddie Knight after her father George had to rush off to help his daughter Ivy. Meanwhile, Will Mitchell’s plans to socialise with Oscar Branning were interrupted when he had to step in and care for his sister Janet.

Elsewhere, Grant Mitchell blamed himself for the crimes of his estranged son Mark Fowler after Max Branning and Cindy Beale allegedly plotted to send Grant to prison for Mark’s behaviour and to keep him away from the car lot and Lauren. The development raises the possibility that Grant’s time in Walford could be coming to an end.

The episode set up a packed week of fallout, reunions and shifting loyalties, with Whitney’s surprise return emerging as the standout moment and Zack left facing an uncertain future.
