Backrooms Cast: Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor Lead the Star-Studded Ensemble

A24’s upcoming sci-fi horror film Backrooms is generating strong interest for its unsettling premise, which follows an eerie “otherworldly dimension” inspired by a 2019 4chan thread. The found-footage project is set to blend suspense, mystery and horror, with Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor leading a cast that also includes Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia.

While the studio has kept many plot details under wraps, Ejiofor is confirmed to play a character named Clark. Reinsve’s role has been less clear, though she is believed to portray a therapist searching for a missing patient, a premise that suggests the film may center on a descent into a strange and dangerous hidden reality. The story’s connection to the internet-born “Backrooms” concept has helped fuel anticipation, especially among horror fans familiar with its eerie mythology.

Reinsve brings notable dramatic credentials to the film. She recently appeared in Sentimental Value, which earned Academy Award attention, and is also recognized for her role in Presumed Innocent. The Norwegian actress has received major awards recognition, including nominations for a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award, marking her as one of the most acclaimed performers in the ensemble.

Ejiofor, a veteran performer with a long list of acclaimed film and television credits, has built a reputation for range and intensity across genres. His filmography includes Love Actually, Children of Men, 2012, Salt, The Martian, Doctor Strange and Venom: The Last Dance, and his performances have earned him major honors such as a British Academy Film Award and a Laurence Olivier Award, along with multiple Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Duplass is another familiar name to horror audiences. He co-wrote and starred in the Creep films and its spinoff series The Creep Tapes, and has also appeared in projects such as Greenberg, The Lazarus Effect, Tully and The Morning Show, which brought him further awards recognition.

Finn Bennett, whose role also remains undisclosed, has recently gained attention for his work in True Detective: Night Country and is set to appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He was also honored with the Trophée Chopard at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Lukita Maxwell continues to emerge as a rising star following performances in Generation and Shrinking, while Avan Jogia, known for Victorious and later series including Twisted, Tut, Ghost Wars, Now Apocalypse and 56 Days, adds further star power to the project.

With its mysterious premise and ensemble cast, Backrooms is shaping up to be one of A24’s most talked-about upcoming horror releases.
