Christine Taylor Reveals What Saved Her Marriage to Ben Stiller

Christine Taylor said the COVID-19 pandemic played an unexpected role in saving her marriage to Ben Stiller after the couple separated in 2017. Speaking on the “McBride Rewind” podcast, Taylor said the time at home during the pandemic gave them space to reconnect as a family and work on their relationship. She described the period as a “little gift” that helped them “find the way back” to each other.

Taylor said she and Stiller, who share two children, Ella and Quinlin, were all living together during a key period in their children’s lives. Their daughter was graduating from high school and their son was finishing eighth grade, and the family suddenly had more time together than usual. According to Taylor, that time allowed them to focus on what had gone wrong and begin healing.

The actress said the couple spent a significant amount of time working with a therapist, which helped them address the issues that had contributed to their breakup. She explained that one of the reasons for the separation was that they “weren’t on the same page with a lot of things.” Taylor added that relationship breakdowns can feel like a failure, which may make people reluctant to discuss them openly.

Stiller and Taylor announced their split in 2017 after 17 years of marriage. At the time, they issued a joint statement saying they had made the decision to separate “with tremendous love and respect for each other.” They emphasized that their priority would remain raising their children and maintaining a close friendship while asking for privacy.

The couple had originally married in 2000 and had built a long family life together before their separation. Their eventual reconciliation was later confirmed by Stiller in a 2022 interview with Esquire, where he said they had gotten back together and were happy about it. He described the reunion as unexpected and said it was one of the positive outcomes that came from the pandemic.

Taylor’s comments add more detail to the couple’s private reconciliation and show how an isolated period during COVID-19 changed the direction of their relationship. What began as a separation became an opportunity to reconnect, reflect, and rebuild. For Taylor, the experience highlighted both the difficulty of marriage problems and the possibility of finding a path forward, even after a breakup that once seemed final.

Stiller and Taylor remain one of Hollywood’s notable couples whose relationship has moved from marriage to separation and then back to partnership. Their story has drawn attention not only because of their celebrity status, but also because it reflects a more personal reality many families experienced during the pandemic: forced proximity, more time for honest conversation, and the chance to reconsider long-standing decisions.
