Toy Story 5: Watch the Trailer, See the Synopsis, Cast and Release Date and More

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story franchise is returning to theaters with Toy Story 5, the next chapter in the long-running animated series that began in 1995. The films follow Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the toy group first introduced to audiences as the belongings of Andy Davis, later shifting to Bonnie’s room. Over four previous films, the series became one of Pixar’s most successful properties, earning critical praise, strong box office results, and multiple Academy Award nominations and wins. A fifth film has now been officially developed, continuing the story for a new generation of viewers while also revisiting beloved characters from earlier installments.
A teaser trailer released in November 2025 offered the first look at the new movie and introduced the central conflict. In Toy Story 5, the toys face a challenge from new technology, specifically a smart device called Lilypad that draws attention away from the traditional toys in Bonnie’s life. The film is expected to explore how toys cope with being replaced or ignored in an increasingly digital world, giving the story a modern theme that reflects changing childhood habits and technology use.
The upcoming sequel also gives Jessie a more prominent leadership role, while Woody returns after his departure at the end of Toy Story 4. Buzz Lightyear will also appear again, including multiple versions of the character, adding another twist to the film’s storyline. New characters are joining the universe as well, including Blaze, a confident child character, and a range of tech-inspired toys. Conan O’Brien voices Smarty Pants, described as a quirky outdated device, while Greta Lee voices Lilypad.
The film also marks a significant update to the franchise’s classic characters. Mr. Potato Head and Mrs. Potato Head are being recast in Toy Story 5 following the deaths of original voice actors Don Rickles and Estelle Harris. The new casting was made with the approval of the actors’ families, allowing the characters to continue appearing in the series.
The Toy Story universe has expanded beyond the main films with projects such as the Disney+ series Forky Asks a Question and the 2022 spin-off film Lightyear, which featured Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz Lightyear. Still, Toy Story 5 is the project drawing the most attention from longtime fans.
Disney CEO Bob Iger first confirmed the fifth film was in development during an investor call on February 8, 2023. Since then, Pixar has revealed more about the movie’s direction, setting up a story centered on the tension between classic toys and modern technology. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on June 19, 2026.
