Nicolas Cage’s Surprising Role in Launching Johnny Depp’s Career Is a Wild Hollywood Story
Johnny Depp’s early Hollywood break may have been shaped in part by an unexpected connection to Nicolas Cage. According to Cage, the two actors were briefly roommates in Los Angeles in the 1980s, before Depp became famous. At the time, Depp had moved to California from Florida at age 20 to pursue a music career, while Cage was already starting to gain attention in film.
Cage recalled that the two initially knew each other through the same woman they were both dating, but they quickly became friends despite a rough start. He said Depp was struggling financially, selling pens to make ends meet, and was staying in Cage’s apartment. Cage also remembered Depp borrowing money, which he said was sometimes used for drinks. During that period, Cage suggested that Depp try acting and offered to connect him with his agent.
That introduction proved to be important. Cage said his agent arranged Depp’s first audition, which was for Wes Craven’s horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Depp landed the role, and the part helped launch a career that would eventually make him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Cage has since described his role in Depp’s early success as only a small part of a much larger journey, but the story has drawn attention because it shows how a chance friendship helped open a major door.
The two actors never appeared together in a film, but Cage said they remained friends over the years. Depp later became known for major roles in films such as Edward Scissorhands and the Pirates of the Caribbean series, building a long career across decades. Cage, meanwhile, has continued to work steadily in film and television, including his recent project Spider-Noir, which is now streaming on Prime Video.
The story also highlights how different both actors’ early paths were. Depp reportedly viewed acting as a temporary way to pay the rent, but after his first screen success, he stayed in the industry. Cage, who came from the Coppola family, already had some Hollywood connections when he met Depp and had recently appeared in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Today, Depp is slowly returning to major acting projects after a highly public legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. He is set to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Ti West’s upcoming A Christmas Carol film, which is scheduled for the 2026 holiday season.
Cage’s recollection adds a surprising behind-the-scenes footnote to Depp’s rise, suggesting that one of Hollywood’s most recognizable careers may have begun with a roommate conversation, a mutual friend, and a recommendation to give acting a shot.
