Ariana Grande has released “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the lead single from her upcoming album Petal. Produced by longtime collaborator Ilya and Max Martin, the buoyant pop track finds Grande looking back on a relationship where a former love may have felt more deeply than she did. Over a shimmering, ambient production, she sings about regret and emotional imbalance, delivering the refrain, “Hate that I made you love me.”
An official music video for the song, directed by Christian Breslauer, is set to premiere on Monday, June 1 at 8 a.m. PST.
Petal will be Grande’s eighth studio album and is being executive produced and co-written by Grande and Ilya. While details about the record remain limited, Grande has described it as “a little feral” and said it explores themes of letting go of negative attachments, including inner struggles, outside voices, and other things that no longer serve her. She has also said the album began as a writing experiment, using one idea as a framework that listeners can interpret in their own lives.
The new single follows a busy period for Grande. Last week, she marked the 10th anniversary of Dangerous Woman by officially releasing “Knew Better Part Two,” a fan-favorite track that had previously been unreleased. Her most recent album, Eternal Sunshine, came out in 2024 through Republic Records.
Grande has remained active beyond music as well. She appeared in the blockbuster film adaptation of Wicked, where she played Glinda the Good Witch, a role she had long hoped to perform. Her schedule continues to stay packed in the months ahead. She is set to launch the Eternal Sunshine Tour in Oakland on June 6, while Petal is scheduled to arrive on July 31 via BabyDoll/Republic Records. Later this year, she will appear in Focker In-Law alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. In 2027, Grande is expected to return to the stage in the West End revival of Sunday in the Park With George, playing Dot opposite Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey.
