Mackenzie Shirilla and Dominic Russo’s Disturbing Text Messages Revealed

Authorities have released text messages exchanged between Mackenzie Shirilla and her late boyfriend, Dominic Russo, adding new context to a case that has remained widely discussed since the fatal crash that killed Russo and another passenger. Shirilla, now 21, is serving two concurrent life sentences with the possibility of parole after 15 years for the crash, which a judge ruled was a deliberate act rather than an accident.

The newly released messages appear to show Shirilla accusing Russo of trying to hurt her during a recent argument. In one text, she asks whether he thought she would start her car with him inside after he had “tried to kill” her. The messages also suggest tension in the relationship, as Shirilla challenges Russo over whether he truly loved her and asks him to explain his feelings. The texts are being viewed as part of the broader background to the events that led to the crash, not as evidence of any wrongdoing by Russo.

Investigators previously learned that Shirilla and Russo had a heated dispute weeks before the deadly incident, during which she was allegedly seen acting aggressively toward him. A family friend reportedly said she struck at him and shouted that she was going to wreck the car. Those accounts, along with the messages, have fueled continued debate over what happened in the period leading up to the crash and whether Shirilla’s statements reflected actual events or her state of mind.

The relationship between Shirilla and Russo was long and unstable, marked by breakups over four years. They began dating when she was 13 and he was 16 and had also reportedly lived together at times. The new texts do not alter the legal outcome of the case. Russo and Davion Flanagan remain the victims in the fatal crash, and Shirilla’s conviction stands.

Interest in the case has remained high because of its unusual and sensational details, including documentaries and ongoing public scrutiny. The release of the messages is likely tied to that attention, offering another glimpse into the troubled relationship that preceded one of Ohio’s most closely watched criminal cases.
