Denver weather: Gloomy, rainy Wednesday expected

Denver and much of Colorado are set for a cloudy and wet Wednesday, with the National Weather Service forecasting a high near 71 degrees under mostly overcast skies. Showers are likely through the day, and there is also a chance of thunderstorms, especially after noon.

Rain chances in Denver are around 60%, while the odds rise to 80% in the mountains. Despite the increased precipitation, temperatures are expected to remain too warm for snow, even at higher elevations, so the precipitation should fall as rain across the region.

Wednesday is expected to be the start of a stretch of unsettled weather. Forecasters say scattered rain is possible on Thursday, followed by a greater chance of thunderstorms on Friday and especially Saturday over the plains. The system could bring multiple rounds of precipitation across the state over several days.

The National Weather Service is also warning that some areas could see heavier rain at times. That raises the risk of localized flash flooding, particularly in burn scars where the ground is more vulnerable to runoff. Residents are being urged to stay alert to changing conditions and any flood-related advisories.

For Wednesday night, temperatures are expected to dip to around 53 degrees, with rain continuing on and off through midnight. The combination of clouds, moisture and mild temperatures will keep conditions cool and unsettled into the evening.

Across Colorado, the forecast points to a wet midweek pattern with thunderstorm activity increasing later in the week. While no snow is expected, the persistent rain and potential for heavier downpours could affect travel, outdoor plans and flood-prone areas. Forecasters say the greatest concern will be for spots that receive repeated rounds of rain, particularly where recent wildfire damage has left soils less able to absorb water.

The weather pattern is expected to remain active as the week progresses, with the plains facing the highest storm chances by the weekend.
