Pinheiros residents on Rua Lisboa warn of robberies

Residents of Rua Lisboa, in São Paulo’s west zone, have organized a local response to a wave of robberies and thefts that they say has intensified along the street. On Monday, May 25, they hung a banner warning pedestrians and drivers about the crime risk, but municipal inspectors removed it in less than two hours, saying it violated the city’s “Cidade Limpa” rules.
The banner was only one of several measures residents have tried in an effort to improve safety. According to the group, they have already contacted the 14th Police District, taken part in meetings of the local security council known as Conseg, reached out to the Pinheiros subprefecture and improved street lighting. They also placed “Vizinhança Solidária” signs on storefronts as part of a community policing initiative promoted by the Military Police. At one point, residents even discussed hiring private security.
Despite these efforts, locals say the situation remains serious. Hairdresser Marcelo Oristanio, who has worked on Rua Lisboa for 17 years, said crime has increased sharply and that police presence tends to rise only after incidents are reported. He said he recently witnessed a robbery while closing his shop with his wife, daughter and friends nearby. According to his account, two motorcyclists slowly passed by, observed the area, returned after spotting a couple parking across the street, surrounded the vehicle, drew a gun and stole the victims’ phones.
Other workers on the street described a similar pattern. Paola Cavanha, who has worked there since 2007, said the area has changed significantly over the years and that some of the students at the pilates and yoga studio where she works have also been robbed. She said a thief tried to snatch her phone this year but failed. Deise Garcia, a veterinarian who has worked at a pet shop on Rua Lisboa since October 2024, said robberies appear to move from one street to another depending on police pressure, affecting nearby roads such as Alves Guimarães, João Moura, Lisboa and Capote Valente.
Official statistics show mixed signals. The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat said overall robberies and thefts in Pinheiros fell in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. However, data released by the agency indicate that crime on Rua Lisboa itself has been rising. There were 24 robbery and theft incidents on the street in the first half of 2025, 37 in the second half, and 24 more in just the first three months of 2026. That means the street reached the same level of incidents in one quarter that it had seen over an entire six-month period the year before.
The Public Security Secretariat said the Military Police has expanded patrols in western São Paulo to curb robberies and thefts in Pinheiros and Vila Madalena, with 62 officers assigned to the area. Police Civil authorities said they have identified and arrested one man linked to the crimes, and believe he committed 13 robberies in the region.
The city government also said crime fell in the first quarter of 2026 and noted that Pinheiros is covered by 7,803 Smart Sampa surveillance cameras, while the Metropolitan Civil Guard maintains 24-hour patrols with added reinforcement in strategic areas and ongoing operations.
