Gayle King Reflects on the Moment She Discovered Her Husband’s Infidelity
Gayle King has spoken openly about one of the most painful and humiliating experiences of her life, describing the moment she discovered that her then-husband, William Bumpus, was cheating on her with one of her closest friends. In a candid conversation on Alex Cooper’s podcast Call Her Daddy, the television host said she returned home unexpectedly after a canceled flight and immediately felt that something was wrong. She arrived with her children and noticed that the house alarm had been triggered, even though Bumpus was supposedly alone inside.
King recalled that her husband rushed out of a room wearing only a towel and told her she could not come in. Suspicious, she forced her way inside and searched the house herself. That is when she found the woman hiding behind a door in her bath sheet, confirming the affair in the most shocking way possible. King said the betrayal hit especially hard because the woman was not just an acquaintance but someone she considered a close friend. She remembered confronting her directly and saying she could not believe what she was seeing. The experience left her feeling devastated and humiliated.
The situation became even more chaotic when police arrived after the alarm was triggered. King said the officers recognized her and, after determining that everything was under control, even asked for autographs. Despite the embarrassing scene, she said her main concern was shielding her young children from the drama. She explained that they knew the woman involved and considered her part of the family, even referring to her as “aunt.”
Afterward, King called her best friend Oprah Winfrey, who immediately understood how serious the situation was. King also contacted the other woman’s husband, but he dismissed her claims and accused her of being delusional. King said she responded angrily and directly, pointing to evidence of the affair in her home.
Although King and Bumpus briefly tried to repair the marriage through counseling, she said the trust was never restored. Over time, she found herself growing increasingly anxious and suspicious, checking on him and even going through his phone. She admitted that she no longer liked the person she had become during that period and realized she could not continue living that way.
King ultimately divorced Bumpus for good in 1993 after discovering additional infidelity. Looking back, she said the experience was deeply painful but also revealed how betrayal can change a person from the inside out.
