Yellow alert: Inmet forecasts heavy rain in Rio Grande do Sul from Thursday, June 18, to Friday, June 19

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a warning on Tuesday, June 16, for intense rainfall across Rio Grande do Sul, with the alert set to cover the period from the night of Thursday, June 18, through much of Friday, June 19.
According to the institute, rainfall may reach between 20 and 30 millimeters per hour, or up to 50 millimeters per day. The forecast also includes strong winds ranging from 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. The warning applies to the entire state of Rio Grande do Sul, indicating that the weather system is expected to affect a wide area rather than being limited to specific municipalities.
Inmet also said the same weather pattern may bring rain to other southern and central-western states, including Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul. This suggests a broader area of atmospheric instability moving across parts of Brazil, with the potential for rain and gusty conditions beyond the main alert area in Rio Grande do Sul.
The warning was classified as yellow, the lowest level on Inmet’s alert scale. Because of that, the risk is considered low for power outages, falling tree branches, flooding, and lightning strikes. Even so, residents are advised to remain aware of changing weather conditions, especially during periods of heavy rain and wind, when localized impacts can still occur.
The expected rainfall may be enough to cause temporary disruptions in low-lying areas or places with poor drainage, particularly if showers become more persistent overnight or early in the day. Stronger gusts could also affect outdoor activities, transportation, and rural areas, where exposed structures and vegetation may be more vulnerable.
Rio Grande do Sul is no stranger to weather alerts, especially during periods of unstable atmospheric movement across southern Brazil. While the current warning is not among the most severe categories, it still signals the possibility of significant rain over a relatively short period of time. Meteorological alerts like this are important for helping communities, emergency services, and local authorities prepare for possible changes in conditions.
The forecast period begins on the evening of Thursday, June 18, and continues into Friday, June 19, making it important for residents and travelers to monitor official updates as the weather approaches. Inmet’s notice covers the full state of Rio Grande do Sul and extends to neighboring regions, reflecting a system with regional impact. Even under a yellow alert, conditions may vary from place to place, with some areas seeing only light rain while others experience heavier bursts and stronger winds.
As the system develops, the main concern will be rainfall intensity, wind gusts, and the possibility of minor localized disruptions. The alert remains the official reference for the forecast window, and the situation may change if weather conditions strengthen or shift.
