Rove McManus Opens Up About Family, Early Career and the Women Who Shaped His Life
Rove McManus has reflected on the women who shaped his life, from his grandmother Fay Bryden, a gifted country baker from Western Australia, to his mother Coralie, whom he describes as one of the coolest people he knows. He also spoke about his paternal grandmother Johanna, known as Mac, who lived to 101, and shared family history that includes his grandfather Bill Bryden, a WWII prisoner of war in Crete who later married after corresponding with Fay following the death of her brother, Ken, in action.
The comedian, best known for hosting the TV show Rove, said his close-knit family played a major role in shaping his personality. He grew up with two older sisters, Catherine and Julie, and a younger brother, Luke, in a household where everyone had nicknames. McManus said his mother encouraged him when he decided at 21 to leave home and pursue comedy in Melbourne, advising him to defer his degree rather than abandon it completely. He sold his car, funded the move, and kept emergency savings with his mother in case things did not work out.
McManus described his childhood as creative and supportive. His family performed backyard concerts, rode bikes together and even let him play with Barbie dolls. He said that growing up with two older sisters and a very involved mother helped shape the man he became. At school, his year 4 teacher Patricia Reid noticed his interest in performing and helped bring out his comedic side. She even cast him in a drag lip-sync routine to The Nolans’ Gotta Pull Myself Together, a performance that became a memorable early example of his comedic talent.
He also recalled personal milestones and early romance. McManus said he was shy and a late bloomer, with his first kiss not coming until year 11 after a school production of Oklahoma! He remembered being dumped on Valentine’s Day during a school camp and said his early relationships were part of his growing up.
Inspired by TV shows such as The Big Gig, McManus realised stand-up comedy could be a real career path. He said he admired hosts and performers including Wendy Harmer, Jean Kittson and Rachel Berger. He also spoke warmly of his friendship with comedian Judith Lucy, saying they often share long lunches and wine together.
On love and family, McManus reflected on his first marriage to Belinda Emmett, who died in 2006, saying the relationship was wonderful and that he once believed finding love again might never happen. He later built a life with Tasma Walton, a close friend of 10 years who proposed to him in 2009 and also asked his mother for permission in advance. McManus and Walton have a daughter, Ruby, now 12. He said Ruby has a strong sense of style and an understanding of gender stereotypes, and he likes that she is comfortable being herself. McManus is currently appearing on The Taskmaster on Channel 10.
