Love Island USA’s Sean Reifel Responds to Mayor’s Comments After Leaving the Villa

Sean Reifel is addressing controversy after Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mayor J. William Reynolds criticized his decision to leave the police force for Love Island USA. Reifel, 29, appeared on season eight of the Peacock reality series and was the first islander dumped from the villa this year. Before joining the show in Fiji, he worked as a police officer in Bethlehem.
The mayor told local outlet WHTM that the police department had invested significant time and taxpayer money in training Reifel, saying the department was disappointed to lose him because the vacancy would be difficult to fill. Reynolds also said he never expected “reality show participation” to take priority over police work. He later told TMZ that Reifel could reapply to the department, but would need to start over in the hiring process.
Reifel’s sister pushed back on social media, calling the mayor’s comments a missed opportunity for the city and police department to connect with the community. On the first episode of Aftersun over the weekend, cameras captured Reifel reacting to the backlash and reading about the mayor’s remarks.
“I guess he’s upset. That’s interesting,” Reifel said. He explained that he had spoken with his department before leaving and had requested unpaid leave. Reifel said the reaction bothered him because, before he left, he had received awards for police work, including helping rescue a woman from a burning building and talking a mentally ill person off a roof.
He said he did not want to speak negatively about the department, adding that everyone there knew where he was going. Reifel also expressed hope that his former colleagues still appreciated the work they had done together.
Reifel’s mother previously responded online as well, arguing that the department did not spend as much on his training as the mayor suggested. She said Reifel already arrived with four years of training as a sheriff’s deputy in Northern California. She also said he had requested leave but was denied, despite the department later describing his departure as a resignation.
The dispute has drawn attention beyond the show, turning Reifel’s brief Love Island appearance into a public debate about public service, personal opportunity, and how his departure from the police department was handled.
