Cape Fear Creator Says Juliette Lewis Was Always the First Choice for the Series Reboot

This week’s episode of Apple TV+’s Cape Fear delivered a notable casting callback by bringing Juliette Lewis into the series, a choice showrunner Nick Antosca said he had wanted for years. Lewis previously appeared in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 Cape Fear film, which was itself adapted from the 1962 movie and John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners. Antosca said he had long admired Lewis’s work and also worked with her on his 2019 Hulu limited series The Act, making her return to the Cape Fear world especially meaningful for him. He explained that once the rights conversation began, he immediately hoped Lewis would eventually be part of the new project, and when production moved forward, the team reached out and she was available.
Lewis appears in Friday’s episode, titled “Phantom Sensations,” mostly concealed in a hoodie and face mask as she follows the ex-con Max Cady, played by Javier Bardem. The episode escalates when Cady returns home to discover that she has broken into his house and left him a video message, triggering a violent response. Her appearance serves as a direct link to the franchise’s earlier film legacy and gives the episode a self-referential edge.
The episode also includes a cameo from Francesca Scorsese, the daughter of filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who appears as an influencer discussing the case in a social media video. Martin Scorsese is an executive producer on the series alongside Steven Spielberg, adding another layer of connection to the property’s cinematic history.
In the Apple TV+ series, Bardem plays the brutal former convict Max Cady, who targets district attorney Tom Bowden, portrayed by Patrick Wilson, and attorney Anna Bowden, played by Amy Adams. The couple is linked to Cady’s imprisonment 17 years earlier, setting up the central conflict of the series. The new adaptation reimagines the story for a contemporary audience while preserving the psychological menace and revenge-driven premise that defined earlier versions.
Lewis’s involvement stands out because of her history with the franchise. In the 1991 film, Robert De Niro played Max Cady, while Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange portrayed Samuel and Leigh Bowden. Lewis, then 18, played their daughter Danielle and earned her first Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for the role. Her return to the material in the Apple TV+ version creates a bridge between the earlier film and the modern series, reinforcing the show’s ties to its source material and previous adaptations.
