Boy Dies in Complexo do Alemão After Bus Accident
The Military Police reported that officers from the Alemão Pacifying Police Unit were carrying out a routine patrol on Avenida Itararé in the Bonsucesso neighborhood when they came across a traffic accident. At the scene, the officers found that a bus and an electric bicycle had collided. The person riding the bicycle, a teenager, died from the injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the police statement, the patrol was taking place as part of normal security operations in the area when the accident was discovered. After confirming the seriousness of the collision, officers took steps to secure the location and handle the response.
The case was referred to the 22nd Police Precinct in Penha, where authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances of the crash. No additional details were immediately provided about the sequence of events that led to the collision, the identity of the teenager, or whether the bus driver was questioned at the scene.
Traffic accidents involving bicycles and larger vehicles often draw concern because of the severe risks faced by cyclists, especially in busy urban roads. In this case, the involvement of an electric bicycle and a bus underscores the vulnerability of riders in mixed traffic areas where vehicles of very different sizes share the same roadway.
The police did not release further information about possible witnesses, traffic conditions, or whether any other vehicles were involved. It was also not immediately clear whether emergency medical teams were called before the teenager’s death was confirmed.
Authorities are now responsible for determining how the collision happened and whether any traffic violations, speed issues, or other factors contributed to the fatal outcome. Investigators at the Penha precinct may review statements from those involved and any available evidence from the scene.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about road safety in Rio de Janeiro’s densely populated neighborhoods, where heavy traffic, narrow streets, and frequent interactions between buses, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians can increase the chance of serious accidents. For local residents, the fatal crash is another reminder of the dangers faced by young cyclists on city streets.
Police have not yet announced whether the victim’s family has been notified or whether the bus company involved will be asked to provide records or support the investigation. Further updates are expected as the case moves forward.
The military police said the patrol encountered the accident unexpectedly and that the incident was handled according to standard procedure. The investigation remains under the responsibility of the civil police at the 22nd precinct.
