Nahid Rana Reprimanded for Breaching ICC Code of Conduct
Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against Australia in Dhaka on Tuesday, after an incident involving Australia batter Josh Inglis. The ICC found that Rana violated Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct, which covers the use of language, actions or gestures that disparage a dismissed batter or could provoke an aggressive reaction during an international match.
The incident took place in the 11th over of Australia’s innings. After dismissing Inglis, Rana charged aggressively toward the batter and used inappropriate language, prompting an official charge from the on-field and match officials. The complaint was laid by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Morshed Ali Khan. Rana admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, meaning no formal hearing was required.
As part of the sanction, Rana received one demerit point, taking his disciplinary record to two demerit points in total. The ICC said this was his second offence within a 24-month period. Level 1 breaches are the least severe category under the ICC disciplinary system, but they still carry sanctions ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points depending on the circumstances.
The ICC’s disciplinary framework states that when a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, those points are converted into suspension points. Two suspension points result in a ban from one Test match or two One-Day Internationals or two Twenty20 Internationals, whichever comes first for the player. Demerit points remain on a player’s record for 24 months from the date they are imposed, after which they are removed.
Rana’s reprimand adds to the disciplinary consequences of a match that Bangladesh played under pressure against Australia in Dhaka. While the fast bowler’s on-field aggression followed a wicket, the ICC determined that his conduct crossed the line set by the Code of Conduct for player behaviour. The sanction serves as a formal warning and a reminder of the standards expected in international cricket, where celebrations and confrontations are closely monitored by match officials.
The incident was resolved quickly because Rana accepted responsibility and agreed to the punishment. However, the demerit point will stay on his record and could become significant if he is involved in further breaches within the next two years.
