Montgomery Slams Walk-Off Homer in MLB Debut to Lift White Sox Past Braves

The Chicago White Sox completed a dramatic comeback on a walk-off home run by rookie Colson Montgomery, rallying from an early four-run deficit to defeat the Atlanta Braves in extra innings. Miguel Vargas sparked the turnaround with a two-run homer in the third inning, cutting into Atlanta’s 4-0 lead after Matt Olson had powered the Braves with two home runs in the first three innings. Montgomery later added an RBI single in the fourth, and Jacob Gonzalez tied the game in the seventh with a run-scoring hit.
Atlanta briefly regained the lead in the 10th inning when Mauricio Dubón delivered an RBI single to put the Braves ahead 5-4. But the White Sox answered in the bottom half with two outs, and Montgomery finished the game with a clutch swing against closer Raisel Iglesias. Montgomery turned on an 0-1 changeup and sent it 343 feet over the left-field wall, setting off a celebration at Rate Field. Automatic runner Andrew Benintendi scored from third ahead of Montgomery on the decisive homer.
The victory was an important one for Chicago, which improved to 35-31 and moved within a half-game of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central. The White Sox showed resilience against a Braves team that entered the game with the best record in Major League Baseball at 45-22.
Atlanta appeared in control early behind Olson’s dominant start at the plate. His pair of home runs accounted for three runs and helped the Braves build a 4-0 cushion through the opening innings. Chicago, however, kept chipping away. Vargas’ third-inning blast jump-started the comeback, Montgomery’s RBI single continued the momentum, and Gonzalez’s timely hit in the seventh tied the score and forced the game into late-inning tension.
The White Sox then survived the Braves’ go-ahead push in the 10th before Montgomery delivered the final blow. His home run not only capped the rally but also gave Chicago a statement win against one of the league’s top teams.
It was a game defined by power, timely hitting, and a late surge from the home side. Chicago overcame an early deficit, answered every challenge from Atlanta, and ended the night with Montgomery’s walk-off blast providing one of the club’s most exciting wins of the season.
