Sydney Sweeney Opens Up About Euphoria Nude Scenes and OnlyFans Storyline

Sydney Sweeney is reflecting on Cassie Howard’s OnlyFans storyline and the nude scenes in the latest season of Euphoria, saying she understood the emotional logic behind the character’s choices even when the material drew backlash. In a Vanity Fair interview published on June 9, Sweeney said Cassie’s arc fits the character’s long-standing need for love and validation. She explained that Cassie does not know how to love herself unless she feels loved by other people, which is why the character becomes increasingly drawn to attention and online fame.

Sweeney said she had been aware of creator Sam Levinson’s broad ideas for Cassie’s season 3 arc years before filming began. According to the actress, Levinson began hinting at his plans as production on season 2 was wrapping, much as he had done in earlier seasons. She said he eventually pitched her the full storyline, including the fact that Cassie would be married to Nate and living in a suburban neighborhood. Sweeney described the character as becoming “crazier than ever” in the new season.

The interview follows criticism over the show’s expanded OnlyFans plotline and its graphic scenes. In season 3, Cassie pursues an OnlyFans career, with the storyline including topless scenes and masturbation on camera. The plot triggered debate online and backlash from some creators and viewers who felt the series mishandled the realities of sex work and the creator economy. Despite that criticism, the show has continued to lean into Cassie’s increasingly chaotic behavior.

Sweeney said she only had a general sense of where the story was headed until she received the final scripts. She recalled that Levinson sent her the scripts and then called to talk through the material, including the nude and sexual scenes. She said he checked in on how she felt about the content and that she approached the role from the perspective of an actor doing her job. Sweeney emphasized that she does not personally agree with Cassie’s decisions, but she sees her responsibility as bringing the character to life as written.

Levinson has publicly defended both the storyline and Sweeney’s performance. In a June episode of The New York Times “Popcast,” he praised her as a fearless, professional actor who arrives prepared and open to change. He said he enjoys working with her because of the flexibility she brings to the role.

Season 3’s storyline places Cassie and Nate in a settled domestic life in the suburbs, with Nate working during the day while Cassie pursues online fame. The contrast between the ordinary setting and Cassie’s increasingly erratic behavior has become a central part of the season’s drama. Sweeney’s comments suggest she views the controversial material as an extension of the character’s deeper emotional wounds rather than simply shock value, and that she remains committed to portraying Cassie in a vulnerable, extreme way.
