Who Is Karmelo Anthony? Case Details and Latest Trial Updates

Violence at U.S. schools has continued to draw national concern, and a fatal incident at a Texas high school track meet has now moved deeper into the criminal justice system. Karmelo Anthony, a teenager from Frisco, Texas, was charged with first-degree murder after the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, also 17, in April 2025. Anthony was later released from jail on a reduced bond and placed under strict house-arrest conditions, and in late June 2025 a Collin County grand jury indicted him on the murder charge.

The case centers on an altercation that allegedly took place at a Frisco track meet on April 2, 2025. According to witness accounts cited by CBS News, Metcalf and Anthony were arguing before Anthony allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Anthony was taken into custody at the scene after cooperating with police. While in the patrol car, he reportedly asked officers whether Metcalf would recover, but Metcalf was later pronounced dead.

Anthony was initially held on a $1 million bond, but a judge later reduced it to $250,000. He was released from the Collin County jail two weeks after the incident, with conditions that included wearing an ankle monitor, remaining inside his parents’ home, staying under adult supervision at all times, and avoiding contact with classmates. Reports said both the Anthony and Metcalf families were present during the bond hearing.

Anthony’s defense attorney, Mike Howard, has suggested the case may involve a self-defense argument. In statements to reporters, Howard said Texans have the right to defend themselves when they reasonably fear for their lives and added that there are two sides to the story. He also described Anthony as a 17-year-old student and athlete who served as captain of both his track and football teams. The defense has not publicly detailed its full legal strategy.

Public attention around the case has also extended to fundraising efforts. A GoFundMe page reportedly created to support Anthony was later removed. A spokesperson for the platform said fundraisers for the legal defense of violent crimes are prohibited. Meanwhile, Austin Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, created a GoFundMe in memory of his son, describing Austin as a bright student, a leader, and a talented football player with a 4.0 GPA and strong future prospects.

Austin Metcalf was a student in Frisco, Texas, and his twin brother, Hunter, was also part of his school and athletic life. The family’s online tribute described Austin as a young man with strong leadership qualities, athletic talent, and a close bond with his brother. His death has left both families and the local community facing the aftermath of a tragedy that unfolded at a school sporting event.

The case is now in the jury system, as prosecutors move forward with the murder charge against Anthony.
