At Pont-Audemer, he spent €6,000 with a retiree’s bank card

A young delivery driver in Pont-Audemer was convicted of breach of trust after using a bank card entrusted to him by an elderly retiree to make unauthorized purchases. The man had been helping the retiree with errands and was thanked with the bank card, which included the PIN written on a note. Believing he had been given permission, he proceeded to spend more than 6,000 euros.

According to the case details, the purchases included the latest laptops, smartphones, and branded clothing. He also shared some of the items with friends. During the proceedings, he argued that he had regularly passed the card receipts back to the elderly man and that the retiree had never objected to the spending.

The prosecution sought a six-month suspended prison sentence, along with a requirement that the defendant attend a civic education course. The court ultimately imposed a four-month suspended prison sentence.

The case highlights how a gesture of gratitude between an elderly resident and a helper escalated into a criminal matter involving misuse of financial trust. The judgment centered on whether the cardholder had truly authorized the spending, but the court found the defendant responsible for abusing the confidence placed in him.

The article reports that the incident occurred in Pont-Audemer and was published on June 7, 2026, by Paris Normandie.
