Death Stranding Movie Gets Major Update as Director’s Comments Surprise Fans
The upcoming Death Stranding movie adaptation will not directly retell the plot of the video games. Instead, director Michael Sarnoski says the film will tell an original story set in the Death Stranding universe, while still including characters and elements familiar to fans. Sarnoski shared the update during IGN Live, explaining that he is currently writing the script and is close to finishing a draft. He said he has been working closely with Hideo Kojima and A24, both of whom have already read the script and are involved in revisions.
According to Sarnoski, Kojima has been generous in allowing him to create a new story within the world of Death Stranding rather than forcing the film to replicate the game’s main storyline. That approach means the movie is not expected to focus primarily on Norman Reedus’ Sam Porter Bridges or attempt to compress the game’s lengthy narrative into a standard feature-length runtime. Sarnoski said he wants to build something original while staying faithful to the tone and themes that made the game distinctive.
The director emphasized that the core ideas of Death Stranding gave him a strong foundation to work from. He pointed to the franchise’s themes of connection, expression, and human relationships as the elements that helped him find a new character and story that could still fit naturally into the universe. He described the project as a creative “sandbox” where he can explore his own ideas while remaining true to the spirit of the source material.
The decision to create an original story may also be a practical one. The first Death Stranding game is known for its dense, unusual narrative and long playtime, making a straightforward adaptation difficult for a general audience. Rather than trying to condense dozens of hours of gameplay and story into one movie, the filmmakers appear to be aiming for a more accessible entry point that can stand on its own.
Kojima’s involvement is expected to be a key part of the project’s credibility. His participation in the revisions suggests the adaptation will stay connected to the creative identity of the games, even if the movie follows a different plot. Sarnoski, who previously directed A Quiet Place: Day One, Pig, and The Death of Robin Hood, brings a background that could help translate Kojima’s ambitious ideas into a film format.
While the project is generating interest, it still appears to be in an early stage. Sarnoski’s comments suggest the script is nearing completion, but filming and release are likely still a long way off. Even so, the update confirms that the Death Stranding film is moving forward with a clear creative direction: an original story, grounded in the game’s world, with Kojima actively involved in shaping it.
