Joshua Henry Wins Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical

Joshua Henry won the Tony Award for best actor in a musical for his performance as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the revival of “Ragtime,” earning his first Tony after three previous nominations. He portrayed a successful Black pianist whose life is shaped by the violence and racism of early 20th-century America.
“Ragtime,” with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and book by Terrence McNally, is based on E.L. Doctorow’s 1975 novel. The musical follows three families from different backgrounds as they navigate ambition, identity and the promise of the American dream at the turn of the century: wealthy white suburbanites, newly arrived Jewish immigrants and an upwardly mobile Black couple.
The production, directed by Lear deBessonet, is staged at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont Theater and features Henry, 41, as Coalhouse, a charismatic musician whose romance with a woman named Sarah becomes one of the emotional centers of the show. The revival has drawn strong reviews and a large ensemble cast, with four other performers also receiving Tony nominations.
In her review for The New York Times, theater critic Laura Collins-Hughes praised Henry’s performance, writing that when Sarah finally comes to Coalhouse, “it is as if a magnetic force pulls her to him,” and that Henry’s singing and acting seemed to come from deep within. She noted that he earned more than one standing ovation during the performance she attended.
Henry’s role demands intense emotional and physical range, as Coalhouse faces racial insults, profound loss and violent antagonists throughout the musical. His baritone voice has been widely praised for conveying longing, joy and anger with technical precision and emotional power, leaving audiences moved by the performance.
In a recent interview, Henry said the moment felt deeply meaningful to him. He described the experience as the fulfillment of a dream, adding that he was grateful to be sharing the work with audiences in a way that touches them.
Before this win, Henry had been nominated for Tony Awards for “The Scottsboro Boys” in 2011, “Violet” in 2014 and “Carousel” in 2018. With this victory, he joins the ranks of Broadway performers recognized for exceptional musical theater work, while “Ragtime” continues to resonate through its story of race, class, immigration and the search for belonging in America.
