Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s Wedding Sparks Debate in Palermo: “I Could Understand It for the Pope”

Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner are celebrating their wedding in Palermo and nearby Bagheria, turning the Sicilian capital into the centre of an intense media and celebrity spectacle. The couple, who reportedly exchanged vows in London last weekend, arrived in Palermo by private jet on Thursday night and are staying at Villa Igiea, a five-star art nouveau hotel where an entire floor of suites has been reserved for around 200 guests. Among those expected or already seen in Sicily are Mark Ronson and Grace Gummer, Charli xcx, Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Donatella Versace and Harry Styles, with some reports also naming Robbie Williams.
The celebrations are being closely guarded, with event staff, local officials and venue workers bound by confidentiality agreements. On Friday, the couple were expected to receive a private tour of Palermo’s Galleria d’Arte Moderna before joining guests at Palazzo Gangi, while a council worker hinted that a buffet-like reception could take place and that Elton John might play piano. The main Saturday event is set for Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria, an 18th-century palace linked to Sicilian aristocracy and known as one of the filming locations for the Netflix adaptation of The Leopard.
Local reactions in Palermo and Bagheria are mixed. Some residents welcome the global attention and the potential boost to tourism and spending in a city that has worked to reshape its image in recent years. Palermo’s mayor, Roberto Lagalla, described the disruption as a “small sacrifice” in exchange for international visibility and economic benefits, arguing that the city is attracting more cultural tourism and higher-spending visitors. Bagheria’s mayor, Filippo Tripoli, also said the town would benefit from the publicity.
Others are less enthusiastic. Shop owners, bar workers and residents complained about road closures, parking restrictions, security cordons and the general inconvenience caused by the wedding festivities. Some said the city feels increasingly like a theme park for visitors and high-profile events, with normal daily life disrupted for several days. One bar worker said the inconvenience would be understandable for a papal visit, but not for a pop star’s wedding.
Still, many locals acknowledge Dua Lipa’s popularity and her connection to Sicily. Her link to Palermo appears to have deepened in 2023 when she was pictured wearing a Palermo football shirt during a Puma promotion, and the couple later shared holiday photos from the city on Instagram following their engagement. In Bagheria, where the celebrations are due to continue, some residents are curious about the celebrity guests and the food, with expectations of a fully Sicilian menu featuring arancini, pasta alla norma and cannoli.
For supporters, the event represents a rare moment of glamour and visibility. For critics, it highlights the pressures that mass tourism and luxury events place on a historic city already struggling with everyday disruptions.
