Olivia Rodrigo Debuts Duet with Robert Smith in “What’s Wrong With Me”
Olivia Rodrigo has revealed one of the most closely guarded pop surprises of 2026: a full duet with The Cure’s Robert Smith on her upcoming album, which is due out next Friday. The announcement came during Rodrigo’s performance at Primavera Sound, where she introduced a new song titled “What’s Wrong With Me” and then brought Smith on stage as the song’s featured vocal partner. Rodrigo told the crowd that the track was especially meaningful to her because it marked the first time she has ever included a feature on one of her songs.
The collaboration had already been known to a small group of industry insiders who attended a private listening session in Los Angeles, but they were asked to keep Smith’s involvement confidential until Rodrigo chose to reveal it publicly. The live debut turned that secrecy into a major festival moment and confirmed that Smith is not just a background presence, but a central voice on the track.
Rodrigo’s admiration for The Cure has been increasingly visible in the lead-up to the album. She previously released “Drop Dead,” which references the band in its lyrics, and followed it with a second single called “The Cure,” though neither release gave any hint that Smith would appear on a separate song in a more prominent capacity. The new duet adds another layer to that connection and reinforces how strongly The Cure has influenced Rodrigo’s current era.
The pairing is not the first time Rodrigo and Smith have shared a stage. Last summer at Glastonbury in the U.K., the two performed The Cure classics “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m in Love” together, underscoring a mutual respect that has now developed into a studio collaboration. Their latest performance suggests that the relationship between the pop star and the post-punk icon has moved from tribute to partnership.
Rodrigo’s third album, “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love,” arrives next Friday. The track list had already been released, but Smith’s appearance on “What’s Wrong With Me” had not been identified in advance. The song is described as a breezy pop cut that still fits into the album’s more emotionally vulnerable half, despite its upbeat sound. Its lyrics center on a moment of self-realization, as the narrator recognizes that a relationship is the source of her unhappiness and physical distress.
The Primavera Sound performance was nearly a surprise appearance in itself, since Rodrigo did not announce her set until just hours before taking the stage, revealing the news on Instagram Stories only five hours ahead of time. That added to the sense of occasion around the duet and helped turn the performance into one of the festival’s most talked-about moments.
Smith’s trip to Spain was not only for Rodrigo. The Cure also headlined Primavera Sound on Friday night, playing 29 songs in their first concert in 18 months. The show marked a return to a setlist focused mostly on the band’s classic material, with only two songs from their 2024 album “Songs of a Lost World.” For longtime fans, that signals the possibility of a more nostalgia-heavy approach on the band’s upcoming European tour.
