Monaco Grand Prix: Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur under medical observation, absent for Saturday qualifying

Ferrari will be without team principal Fred Vasseur for Saturday’s qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix after the Italian team announced that he has been placed under observation at a local medical facility following medical examinations. In a statement posted on X, Ferrari said Vasseur “will not be present at the circuit today” and added that no further medical details would be released. The team also wished him a speedy recovery and said it hoped to see him back at the track soon.

Vasseur, 58, has led Ferrari since 2023 and remains one of the most prominent figures in Formula 1’s most famous team. His absence comes during an important weekend for the Scuderia at one of the sport’s most high-profile events, where qualifying is especially crucial because overtaking is notoriously difficult on the narrow streets of Monaco.

Ferrari arrives in Monte Carlo sitting second in the constructors’ championship with 147 points, well behind Mercedes, which leads with 219. Despite that strong position in the standings, Ferrari’s drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have yet to win a race this season after the opening five Grands Prix. The lack of victories has added pressure on the team as it continues its pursuit of performance improvements and a first major breakthrough of the campaign.

For Leclerc, the Monaco weekend carries extra significance. The Monegasque driver races at home on a circuit where he has often been expected to deliver a standout result. Monaco is widely seen as one of the toughest and most prestigious stops on the Formula 1 calendar, and Ferrari fans have been hoping Leclerc can capitalize on local knowledge and support to challenge for pole position and a potential podium finish.

Ferrari’s statement did not clarify whether Vasseur’s condition would affect the rest of the weekend beyond Saturday’s qualifying session, leaving open the possibility that he could return later depending on his recovery. The team’s focus, meanwhile, remains on maximizing performance in Monaco, where track position can determine the outcome more than raw race pace.

The news adds an unexpected off-track storyline to a weekend already centered on one of Formula 1’s most demanding races. With Vasseur absent, Ferrari will continue preparations under its existing leadership structure as it seeks to convert strong championship form into its first victory of the season.
