Americans React to the Reflecting Pool’s Newly Completed Paint Job

Water has begun flowing again in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after weeks of renovation work, marking the end of a project that drew attention for both its scope and its cost. The restoration was launched by President Donald Trump in early April and included resurfacing the pool, fixing leaks and repainting it in a bright shade described as “American flag blue.”

The project was first presented as a $2 million undertaking, but federal records now show the final expected cost has risen to $13.1 million. The sharp increase has added to the public interest surrounding the work, which took place at one of Washington’s best-known landmarks.

The reflecting pool, located in front of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall, is a familiar feature for visitors to the U.S. capital and often serves as a backdrop for photos, ceremonies and major public gatherings. Its temporary closure and renovation attracted curiosity from tourists and observers as the work progressed.

BBC spoke with tourists after the pool began refilling to hear their reactions to the finished result and the new colour. Some visitors were surprised by the change, while others appeared eager to see the pool restored and back in use. The vivid blue finish stood out against the surrounding marble monuments and open parkland, making the renovated landmark look noticeably different from its previous appearance.

The refurbishment addressed practical problems as well as visual changes. According to the description of the project, the pool was resurfaced and leaks were repaired, work intended to improve the structure and maintain its long-term condition. The repainting also gave the pool a distinctly new look that has already become part of the discussion around the renovation.

The reflecting pool is a prominent and symbolic place in Washington, frequently associated with national memory and large public events. Any changes to its appearance are likely to draw notice, especially when tied to a high-profile presidential project. The combination of rising costs, visible aesthetic changes and the location’s significance helped turn the renovation into a point of public conversation.

As water returned to the pool, the landmark resumed its familiar role in the city’s landscape, though with an updated appearance that may be more striking than before. Visitors continued to gather around the site to take in the newly completed work and assess the effect of the blue paint and repaired surface.

The renovation is now complete, and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is once again filled, offering a refreshed version of a well-known Washington monument setting.
