Govt Declares Two-Day Bakrid Holiday in Thiruvananthapuram

The state government has announced a two-day holiday on Wednesday and Thursday in connection with Bakrid. The closure will apply to all government offices, public sector undertakings, educational institutions, including professional colleges, and institutions covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The decision means public offices and most academic institutions across the state will not function for two consecutive days. The holiday notification has been issued to mark the religious festival and provide observance time for Bakrid.

All government-run establishments will remain shut during this period, while students and staff at schools, colleges, and other educational institutions will also be on break. Professional colleges are included in the list of institutions that will remain closed. In addition, institutions falling under the Negotiable Instruments Act will observe the holiday as declared by the government.

Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha, is one of the major festivals observed by the Muslim community. The holiday is generally marked by prayers, family gatherings, and the sharing of meals. The state’s announcement follows the customary practice of declaring public holidays for major festivals observed in the region.

The two-day closure is expected to affect routine administrative work in government offices and academic activities in educational institutions. However, essential services and emergency functions are likely to continue as per standard practice, though the government announcement specifically applies to the listed offices and institutions.

The holiday declaration comes ahead of the festival and provides advance notice to government employees, students, and the public. People planning official visits, banking-related work, or academic schedules during these days may need to adjust accordingly.

Bakrid is celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and is observed with special prayers and sacrificial rites by many Muslim families. The festival holds religious significance and is celebrated in many parts of the country.

The state government’s order ensures that the observance is formally recognized across public institutions. With offices and colleges closed on Wednesday and Thursday, normal operations are expected to resume after the holiday period ends.

The declaration reflects the government’s annual practice of aligning public holidays with major religious observances. For residents, the announcement provides clarity on institutional closures and schedules during the Bakrid holiday period.

Overall, the two-day holiday will bring a temporary pause to government administration, education, and some other institutional activities across the state in observance of Bakrid.
