But his life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with cancer, forcing him into a difficult fight against a serious illness. Even so, he continued to show resilience and determination throughout his battle.
DJ’s story of courage and perseverance began to spread widely, touching people across the United States and beyond. As his message of strength inspired more and more people, police officers started honoring him in special ways and welcoming him as one of their own. Over time, he was deputized thousands of times in different places around the world, including Texas, Florida, Missouri, Israel, Turkey and other locations. These gestures reflected the support and admiration he earned through his bravery and positive spirit.
In March 2025, DJ received another major honor when President Donald Trump announced that he had been named an honorary Secret Service agent. The moment was emotional for DJ and his father, Theodis Daniel, who stood proudly beside him as the teen held up his certificate for the crowd. The audience responded with applause, underscoring the powerful impact of the recognition and the message behind it. The tribute highlighted how DJ’s journey had become a symbol of hope and possibility.
Now, DJ is continuing to share that message in a new way. In September 2026, he will release a children’s illustrated book titled Special Agent DJ. The book is being created with author Jarred Weisfeld and is meant to inspire young readers through a story centered on bravery, compassion and the everyday work of police officers who serve their communities. Published by Evan and Nathan Publishing and distributed by Simon and Schuster, the book aims to carry DJ’s story to a wider audience.
Through his journey from a child inspired by first responders to a young cancer fighter recognized by police and national leaders, DJ has become a powerful example of resilience. His upcoming book extends that legacy, offering children a hopeful message about overcoming challenges, helping others and believing that extraordinary things can happen.
