NBC Drops Bombshell on Hunting Party Cancellation: What Happened

NBC has officially canceled The Hunting Party, ending the Melissa Roxburgh-led crime drama after two seasons and confirming that it will not return for Season 3. The show had been considered on the bubble for much of the year, and the decision came as NBC continued finalizing its summer 2026 cancellation and renewal plans. The loss adds to a growing list of recent NBC departures, including Law & Order: Organized Crime, Brilliant Minds, and Stumble.

The cancellation appears to reflect NBC’s broader strategy heading into the 2026–2027 television season. The network is reportedly focusing on developing stronger drama and comedy launches, especially projects tied to familiar names and established franchises. Among the high-profile titles being discussed are a remake of The Rockford Files starring David Boreanaz, Peter Krause’s return to Peacock after 9-1-1, and a new comedy from New Girl and The Last Man on Earth actor Jake Johnson. Emily Deschanel is also said to be returning to television, underscoring NBC’s push for recognizable talent and potentially larger audiences.

Compared with those prospective offerings, The Hunting Party may have struggled to stand out. The series, centered on an FBI profiler and a hunt for serial killers, never became the breakout hit NBC may have hoped for when it was launched. Roxburgh previously found major network success with Manifest, which ran for four seasons and developed a devoted audience, so expectations were high that she could lead another long-running series. This time, however, the ratings and overall response were not strong enough to secure a third season.

One factor that may have worked against the show was its title. Around the same time The Hunting Party was airing, another series, The Hunting Wives, was also drawing attention. The similar names likely caused confusion for some viewers, and the title itself did not clearly communicate the premise. Unlike The Hunting Wives, which suggests its story more directly, The Hunting Party does not immediately indicate that it follows a hunt for dangerous fugitives. While that may not have been the sole reason for its cancellation, it may have contributed to the series struggling to establish a distinct identity.

The late timing of the cancellation makes the news particularly disappointing for the cast and crew. By this stage in the television cycle, many performers and production staff are already looking ahead to fall work, and a cancellation announced this far into the year can leave fewer immediate options. Still, there is some optimism that the talent involved will quickly move on to new projects, whether on broadcast television or streaming platforms.

For NBC, the move reflects a network continuing to reshuffle its lineup in search of stronger performers. For fans, it marks the end of another short-lived series that never fully found its footing despite a recognizable lead and a high-profile home on network television.
