Shakira Opens Up About Her Relationship Status After Gerard Piqué Split

Shakira has spoken candidly about rebuilding her life after her split from former partner Gerard Piqué, saying that when “your world collapses,” daily responsibilities still continue. In a new interview with People, the Colombian singer reflected on the emotional and practical demands of starting over while raising her two sons, Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11. She said motherhood gave her strength and a new perspective on life, and that her children have been one of the greatest gifts in her life.
The 49-year-old artist said she is currently focused on parenting and is not thinking about dating at the moment. She noted that she may be open to a relationship in the future, but only when her children are older. Shakira also said the difficult period after her breakup helped her understand how resilient people can be when faced with hardship.
Shakira and Piqué began dating after meeting while filming the music video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).” They confirmed their separation in June 2022 after years together, following reports of Piqué’s alleged affair. Since then, Shakira has continued to speak publicly about how she processed the breakup and moved forward.
She also discussed her 2023 hit “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” her collaboration with producer Bizarrap, which many saw as a pointed response to the breakup. Shakira described the song as a form of catharsis, saying she needed to write about what she was experiencing without censoring herself. She said the studio session felt exciting and that everyone knew they had something special, though she did not expect the track to reach No. 1 on Spotify the day it was released.
According to Shakira, the song was deeply therapeutic. She said it made her feel lighter and that many women who had gone through similar situations told her the track helped them feel seen. She added that she once considered herself more fragile than life ultimately proved her to be.
Her comments come as public interest continues around both her personal life and legal issues, including her tax fraud case.
