Roland Garros Quarterfinal Preview: Can Chwalinska’s Dream Run Continue in Paris?

Two quarterfinal matches headline Wednesday’s action at Roland Garros as the top half of the women’s draw takes the stage on Court Philippe-Chatrier with a place in the semifinals at stake. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, the highest-ranked player left and the only quarterfinalist in that section with previous Grand Slam semifinal experience, meets No. 25 seed Diana Shnaider. In the earlier match, No. 22 seed Anna Kalinskaya faces qualifier Maja Chwalinska, whose surprising run has made her one of the tournament’s biggest stories.
Chwalinska, ranked No. 114, has advanced through a standout path that includes wins over Zheng Qinwen, Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari and French player Diane Parry in the fourth round. The left-hander entered the season hoping to break into the top 100 and is now projected to rise well beyond that milestone. She has embraced her underdog status throughout the event, saying that every opponent is ranked above her and that she is simply trying to play her own game without pressure. Three of her four victories have come in straight sets, highlighting the consistency behind her unexpected breakthrough.
Kalinskaya is also pursuing a major breakthrough of her own. The Russian has reached the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career, following her run at the 2024 Australian Open. She arrives after a dramatic win over Anastasia Potapova, a match in which she survived a tense finish and came back from a 3-0 deficit in the super tiebreak. Kalinskaya called it the craziest Grand Slam match she has played. She has already reached two quarterfinals this season but is still seeking her first major semifinal. She said that two weeks ago she would not have believed she would be in this position, and now hopes to enjoy the moment and compete at her best.
Sabalenka, meanwhile, continues to look like the player to beat in Paris. She remains the last top-five seed in the women’s draw and has handled the pressure of a chaotic tournament by staying focused on her own level. In the round of 16, she defeated Naomi Osaka in straight sets, finishing with 12 aces and 39 winners. The result extended her remarkable run to 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinals, a streak matched by very few players in the modern era. Sabalenka has already won four major titles, all on hard courts, but remains in search of her first Grand Slam trophy on clay. After finishing runner-up at Roland Garros in 2025, she is well positioned for another deep run.
Shnaider brings her own momentum into the matchup, reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinal with an aggressive baseline game and heavy topspin. Her win over Madison Keys in the previous round showed both her power and her ability to adjust tactically, especially with deeper balls and variation. Shnaider said her mental growth has been a key factor in the tournament, particularly in staying calm after losing sets and avoiding negative self-talk. She views the quarterfinal as a major achievement already, but also understands that a victory over Sabalenka would be the biggest win of her career.
