Nicholas Galitzine Almost Wore the He-Man Bob in Masters of the Universe — Here’s Why It Was Scrapped

Mattel’s new live-action Masters of the Universe film is drawing attention not only for its cast and action, but also for a surprisingly detailed creative choice: He-Man’s hair. Following the success of Barbie, the company is bringing another of its best-known properties to the big screen, with Travis Knight directing and Nicholas Galitzine starring as Adam Glenn / He-Man. Galitzine said he bulked up significantly for the role to achieve the superhero physique associated with the character, but the production also spent time deciding how closely to follow He-Man’s famous cartoon look.
In a conversation with CinemaBlend, Galitzine explained that the team discussed the character’s iconic bob haircut, but eventually decided it would not fit the live-action story they wanted to tell. He said the goal was to create a hairstyle that felt heroic and “Herculean,” while still allowing for some evolution as the character develops on screen. The result is a look that keeps He-Man recognizable, while toning down the more exaggerated elements of the animated version.
The actor also discussed how Adam’s appearance changes before and after transformation. When viewers first meet Adam on Earth, his hair is meant to look flatter, greasier, and less vibrant, reflecting the character’s incomplete confidence and power. Once he becomes He-Man, the hairstyle becomes fuller and more stylized, mirroring his growing self-assurance and strength. According to Galitzine, that visual progression was intentional and designed to track Adam’s emotional and physical evolution.
The film’s approach to He-Man’s appearance appears to have paid off. Early reactions have noted the movie’s comedy, but the hair design also seems to strike a balance between fidelity to the source material and the realities of live-action adaptation. Galitzine’s He-Man still has the long blonde hair associated with the character, but the final version is less cartoonish than the original animated bob.
Other characters in the film were also adapted with live-action practicality in mind. Teela, for example, has been given a less revealing costume than in some earlier versions, showing that the filmmakers were adjusting familiar designs for a modern theatrical setting. At the same time, He-Man himself remains visually close to the classic version in ways that will likely please longtime fans.
With Masters of the Universe set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026, the film is emerging as one of the more closely watched studio releases of the year. Interest in the project continues to build as audiences wait to see how the franchise translates to live action, how Galitzine performs as the legendary hero, and whether the movie’s careful approach to He-Man’s look helps launch a new chapter for the property.
