Woman Dies After Bungee Jump Safety Cord Is Left Unattached, Video Shows
A 21-year-old woman in Brazil died over the weekend after a bungee jumping accident at Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo. According to multiple Brazilian media reports, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had signed up for an adventure excursion that ended in tragedy when authorities and witnesses said a safety rope was not properly attached before the jump. Video circulated online reportedly shows the horrifying moment as bystanders realized the rope had been left on the ground, with one witness shouting in alarm while filming the scene.
Authorities say Maria Eduarda fell about 40 meters, or roughly 131 feet, after being sent over the bridge by staff members connected to the bungee jumping operation. Emergency crews, including a police helicopter, responded quickly, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident has shocked the local community and those who knew her. Reports say she had recently graduated in physical education and sports management and had purchased a guided package for the bridge jump as part of what was meant to be a celebratory outing.
The case has quickly moved into a criminal investigation. According to Brazilian outlets cited in reports, six people have been questioned in connection with the death, and three men were arrested at the scene and charged with homicide with implied malice. Investigators are examining whether the company operating the jump had the proper authorization, whether safety procedures were followed, and whether staff failed to confirm that the rope was attached before the woman was sent off the bridge.
One investigator, Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy, said the event was run by a team that was not regulated and did not have authorization to operate there, adding that the fatality appeared to result from a failure to verify and supervise the rope placement before the jump. Local officials are also seeking answers. Limeira’s City Council is reportedly taking action following the death, while Mayor Murilo Félix criticized what he described as longstanding safety concerns in the area and the lack of adequate protection measures.
The bridge and surrounding area have been described as having known risks for years, and officials are now facing pressure to determine how such a deadly failure could happen. Brazil’s Civil Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and who may be held responsible. The tragedy has left a family grieving and a community demanding accountability after a recreational activity turned into a fatal incident.
