Why Kingdom Hearts 4 Skipped Summer Game Fest 2026

Square Enix’s long silence on Kingdom Hearts 4 may have a simpler explanation than fans feared: the company appears to be prioritizing Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, its next major RPG release, before shifting attention back to Sora’s next adventure. Kingdom Hearts 4 was first announced in April 2022 with a trailer that introduced Quadratum, a new realistic-looking setting that signaled a major direction change for the series. Since then, updates have been scarce, fueling speculation every time a major gaming event approaches.

That pattern continued at Summer Game Fest 2026, where Kingdom Hearts 4 was once again absent despite widespread fan expectations. The lack of news stretched an already long drought, especially after Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was canceled in May 2025 as part of Square Enix’s broader “shift from quantity to quality.” At that time, Square Enix did share a few new screenshots from Kingdom Hearts 4, but the company has offered little official information since. Series director Tetsuya Nomura later gave fans a brief reassurance during a Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis livestream, saying development was progressing well and remained on schedule, but no further details followed.

The timing of Square Enix’s recent announcement for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation helps explain the quiet around Kingdom Hearts 4. Revelation now has a spring 2027 launch window, meaning Square Enix has a major flagship RPG to promote for the foreseeable future. Both Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and Kingdom Hearts 4 are part of Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit 1, the division behind many of the company’s biggest and most important role-playing games. That overlap likely means internal resources, including Nomura’s attention, are currently focused on finishing Revelation before the company ramps up another large marketing campaign.

This strategy also fits the way modern game marketing works. Big releases are often promoted in a much shorter window than in the past, and Square Enix has followed that pattern with recent titles. Final Fantasy 16 was announced in 2020 and released four years later, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was revealed less than two years before launch. Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced much earlier, but Square Enix may be waiting until Revelation is out before giving it another major promotional push.

For now, Kingdom Hearts fans are left waiting and watching every showcase for signs of the game’s return. Summer Game Fest 2026 did not deliver the long-awaited update, but the new release window for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation makes Square Enix’s silence on Kingdom Hearts 4 feel more strategic than alarming. If that proves true, the next major clue about the sequel may not come until after Revelation launches next spring.
