The Strokes Announce New Album Reality Awaits
The Strokes have announced that a new album is on the way, ending a six-year wait since their last full-length release. The band’s most recent album, The New Abnormal, arrived on April 10, 2020, and has remained their latest studio project until now. On April 6, 2026, the group revealed that their next record is titled Reality Awaits and is scheduled for release sometime this summer.
The announcement came through a short 13-second video styled like a vintage car commercial. The clip features an ’80s-inspired musical snippet that appears to tease new material, while the retro visuals introduce the album title and hint at the band’s return. Although the group did not provide a specific release date, the summer timeframe suggests the rollout is already underway.
Fans may not be entirely surprised by the news. In recent months, The Strokes have been attached to several major 2026 festival lineups, including Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, and Sea.Hear.Now. Those appearances had fueled speculation that the band was preparing for a larger comeback, making the new album announcement feel like a natural next step.
The news also arrives after renewed attention around frontman Julian Casablancas’ relationship with the band’s output. In a 2024 interview, Casablancas appeared to imply that he has been more personally invested in his work with The Voidz than with The Strokes, though he emphasized that he still respects the band and does not view it negatively. He said that he has always included political ideas in Strokes songs to some degree, but suggested that some listeners may not fully recognize that aspect of the music.
Casablancas also described The Strokes as a valuable “day job” that he feels fortunate to have, while adding that he tries not to let it take over the time or energy he needs for other creative work. His comments hinted at the balancing act between his long-running role in one of the most influential rock bands of the 2000s and his more experimental projects elsewhere.
Still, the new album announcement signals that The Strokes are once again actively moving forward as a band. With Reality Awaits set for release this summer and festival dates already in place, 2026 is shaping up to be a major year for the group. For fans who have waited since The New Abnormal, the return marks the beginning of a new era and a long-anticipated follow-up to one of the band’s most acclaimed recent records.
