Swansea’s Burgess Helps Socceroos Secure World Cup Victory

Swansea City defender Cameron Burgess played a key role as Australia opened their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkey in Vancouver.

The 30-year-old was selected in a back three and completed the full 90 minutes as the Socceroos produced a disciplined defensive performance to secure a clean sheet. Australia were under sustained pressure for much of the match, with Turkey dominating possession at 71.7% and registering 30 shots, including eight on target.

Despite the pressure, Australia struck first through Watford forward Nestory Irankunda, who scored in the first half. Connor Metcalfe added a second goal after the break to seal the victory and give Australia an ideal start to their Group D campaign.

Burgess, who was born in Scotland, earned his 28th cap for Australia. His appearance came after a busy season for Swansea, during which he played 51 matches across all competitions. His display added to a growing Swansea presence at the tournament and highlighted his importance to the national side on the international stage.

Australia’s next match in Group D will be against co-hosts the United States in Seattle on Friday, 19 June, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 BST.

Burgess is the second Swansea player to feature at this summer’s tournament. Winger Eom Jisung made his World Cup debut as a substitute in South Korea’s 2-1 Group A win over Czech Republic in Guadalajara on Friday. Another Swansea midfielder, Marko Stamenic, could also be involved soon, with New Zealand due to face Iran in Group G on Tuesday, 16 June at 02:00 BST. Stamenic started New Zealand’s warm-up friendly defeat to England and is expected to be in contention for the upcoming group-stage fixture.

Australia’s victory gives them an early boost in a demanding group and underlines the value of experience and organisation at the back. For Burgess, the result marked another strong outing in international football and a successful start to the tournament as he helped Australia overcome a highly active Turkey side.
