Anthony Gordon transfer latest: Barcelona join Bayern Munich in race to sign Newcastle winger

Barcelona have entered the race to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, adding fresh competition to Bayern Munich in the battle for one of the Premier League club’s key attacking players. Newcastle are now understood to be in talks with both European sides over the 25-year-old, whose future has become a major talking point ahead of the summer transfer window.
Gordon has four years remaining on the long-term contract he signed with Newcastle in October 2024, but that has not stopped interest building around him. He ended the season as Newcastle’s top scorer with 18 goals, yet he was left out of the final six Premier League matches and was an unused substitute in the club’s last four games. The decision was widely viewed as Newcastle protecting a valuable asset as transfer speculation intensified.
Bayern Munich were the first major club linked with the England winger, with reports earlier this month saying they had opened talks and were keen to strengthen an attack already featuring Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. Barcelona’s entry into the race now changes the picture, giving Gordon another high-profile option and increasing the likelihood of a bidding contest.
Newcastle’s position may also influence the situation. Chief executive David Hopkinson recently suggested the club may need to sell before making major signings this summer, and Gordon is considered one of their strongest assets. The Magpies have not been informed by the player that he wants to leave, but they would be expected to listen if a substantial offer arrives.
Liverpool remain another club to watch. The Merseyside side came close to signing Gordon in the summer of 2024, and it is unclear whether they will renew their interest. For now, however, Barcelona and Bayern appear to be the most active clubs in the chase.
The wider context at Barcelona could also shape any move for Gordon. Reports suggest the club are still interested in strengthening the left side of their attack, and the winger could become a target if they are unable or unwilling to complete a permanent deal for Marcus Rashford. The Manchester United loanee has reportedly made clear that he wants to stay at Barcelona next season and is even willing to accept a pay cut to help make that possible, but United do not want another loan agreement and view the £26 million option price as fair.
If Barcelona decide not to pursue Rashford, Gordon could emerge as an alternative who fits their needs. His pace, direct running and ability to contribute goals would make him an appealing fit for a team looking to add depth and competition in wide attacking areas.
Gordon and Rashford are both part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, and their club futures could now hinge on how Barcelona shape their summer plans. The coming weeks are likely to determine whether Gordon remains at Newcastle or becomes one of the headline transfers of the window.
