Man, 36, in Court on Charges of Raping and Murdering Elderly Woman

A 36-year-old man has appeared in court charged with rape and murder after the death of a woman in her 80s in Cornwall.

Police said the woman was found dead at a property in the Ashton area, near Helston, shortly after midnight on Friday, 30 May 2026. Her family has been informed of her death. The circumstances surrounding the case have prompted a major police investigation.

Edward Holden, 36, of Penzance, appeared before Truro Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 1 June 2026. He was remanded into custody and is due to appear before Truro Crown Court on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the incident has caused concern in the local community and urged people not to speculate or post commentary on social media while inquiries continue. Officers said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the woman’s death and asked the public to support the inquiry.
