Rio de Janeiro Records June Daily Low Temperatures Below Monthly Average for the Past 10 Years

The cold morning recorded in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, measured at 11.7°C in Vila Militar by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), fell below the average June minimum observed over the past ten years. The reading also set a new low temperature record for 2026, according to the institute’s data.

Inmet reports that the average minimum temperature for June over the last decade has been 14.8°C, making Monday’s figure notably colder than typical for the month. The low temperature was among the most significant of the year and highlighted an unusual cold spell affecting parts of the city.

Meteorological records from different agencies showed slight variation in the coldest June temperatures ever registered in Rio de Janeiro. The city’s weather alert system, Alerta Rio, recorded the lowest June temperature at 8.6°C in Alto da Boa Vista, while Inmet recorded 8.7°C in Vila Militar. Specialists from both institutions said the difference may be explained by the locations of the monitoring stations, which can influence local readings.

According to climate monitoring meteorologist Guilherme Alves Borges, from FielPRO, the drop in temperature on Monday was linked to maritime wind circulation. This system was associated with a high-pressure area positioned over the Atlantic Ocean, which helped bring colder air to the region and reinforced the lower temperatures observed at dawn.

The combination of oceanic winds and atmospheric pressure created conditions that favored a stronger cooling effect during the early morning hours. Such patterns are common in coastal areas, where changes in wind direction and pressure systems can quickly influence local weather and produce significant temperature drops.

The reading in Vila Militar added to a broader trend of colder mornings in Rio during the winter season, but Monday’s low stood out because it was well below the June average of the past decade. The data also underscored how station placement and urban geography can lead to slightly different thermal records across the city.

While the temperature did not break the all-time June record across all monitoring points, it marked one of the coldest readings recorded by Inmet in 2026 and drew attention to the ongoing influence of maritime air masses on Rio’s weather.
